The four-session acting skills programme for the New Venture Theatre, Brighton
We ran our Acting From A Script acting class over four Mondays in February 2025, as part of the New Venture Theatre Brighton’s outreach programme.
Each week, thirty or so participants gathered for two hours’ dive into script work.
Warmup
A quick mindset and confidence exercise to help the varied experience group to feel comfortable together.
Body, breathing and voice warmup for relaxation, breathing control and volume.
Verbal warmup with tongue twisters and chants for clarity and authority, accuracy and emotion.
A matter of fact
A short introduction to stagecraft and stage setup, plus exercises to help the audience be able to see, hear and understand.
The main event
The group split into smaller groups of 2-7 people, often with those who wanted to direct, and were each given one of our original short plays to rehearse, set and get on its feet.
And the last hour saw each group performing their play in the Studio, with reflection and feedback from the group.
Participant responses
“Tonight I have had so much fun being a Director and Actor – totally smashed it and so much positive energy and feedback – absolutely loved it.” Steven Valentine
“Fantastic evening at the New Venture Theatre participating in their evening class.” Sophie Methuen Turner
