Review 2012 / Preview 2013

2012 has seen some exciting developments for Speaking Well in Public, and some new ventures for 2013.

Training and public speaking events

At my stand at the Brighton and Hove Business Day in January, I held a prize draw and was pleased to present public speaking taster sessions to delegates from the winners; a PR company and a payroll service.

I delivered a range of Confident Public Speaking Skills one-day courses in association with Centrevents of Shoreham-by-Sea among others, travelling to Birmingham and Pontefract as well as to London and the South East region to deliver courses over the year.

Several 1-1 private sessions with actors explored sight reading and script for audition and performance.

Summer 2012 brought a management learning and development consultancy with a well known London financial service. I presented a portfolio of leadership development master-classes, training delegates in confident public speaking and voice, management techniques, business facilitation, performance management, appraisals, coaching and communication skills to new, future and experienced managers.

In November, I delivered the keynote speech on speaking with confidence for the assembled business people at the Brighton and Hove City Business Club.

You can read some of the superb feedback for my courses here.

Plans for 2013 already include a range of events; Investigative Interview Skills both for business and for a verbatim theatre company, a forum theatre event and a programme of confident public speaking for managers.

Performance and roleplay

I appeared in several corporate roleplay events for assessments and promotion boards this year, providing consistent and challenging characters and situations for the delegates to address. Roleplay is so useful for business, as it creates realistic situations for training and assessment and gives the delegates the chance to learn by doing and to give practical demonstrations of what they can do. Far more effective than sitting examinations and writing application forms. 2013 will offer Corporate Roleplay Skills events for actors and for business.

May saw my series of performances of the solo play “Turning the Handle”, part of the “Glimpse” quartet by Thomas Everchild. I play an Edwardian lady reminiscing about her happy years taking part in What the Butler Saw films. There are plans afoot to film the play in 2013.

Thomas and I took part in the London Sci Fi 48 hour film challenge this year – under the production name Phantom Fleet we literally had 48 hours to collect instructions, write, film, edit and post produce a short film. The result, “The Recovering”, was successfully delivered, was part of a screening evening and has been streamed online.

Out and about

Speaking Well In Public were guests at a range of events, including film screenings at the Brighton Film-makers’ Coalition and Movie Bar, Cecil Rice and Dion Salvador Lloyd’s artists’ Open House private views and Emma Bailey’s dance photography exhibition.

It’s been quite a year for networking and business events, too – the SEAL project business coaching sessions, Likemind, Open Coffee, First Friday and City Business Club Breakfast networking meetings, gatherings for Equity, the Sussex Playwrights Club and the Sussex Trainers Forum, and visits to the Broadcast Video Exhibition, the Production Show and the Shooting People film forum.

Community events

I delivered some of my occasional community events on Reading to Children, including a session at the Book Nook children’s bookshop and café – parents heard about some of the techniques used by actors and broadcasters, practising tongue twisters and reading aloud with their children over coffee and cake.

I’ll be presenting a few more free community events in 2013, including SpeakEasy – come along and talk about your public speaking issues! We’ll be looking first at the Elevator Speech – your polished, elegant answer to the question “And what do you do?” All you pay for is your coffee and cake. Keep an eye on the website for details and dates.

Writing

I’m currently working on a new book all about dealing with nerves – why we get nervous, what nerves do to us and what we can do to deal with nerves and use them as fuel to power a successful presentation.

I’ll shortly be recording the script for my Reading to Children CD.

News about both new publications soon.

New ventures

My website www.speakingwellinpublic.co.uk is undergoing development for 2013, focussing on Confident Public Speaking Skills for beginners and refreshers, Professional Public Speaking Skills for improvers and experienced speakers, plus a range of Reading Aloud Skills for all occasions.

We’re expanding our services with the new site www.managementcreative.co.uk which will offer a portfolio of new specialist courses for leadership, management and business.

We wish you a Happy New Year and all the best for a confident and successful 2013.

Review 2011

December 2011 sees the close of a busy and challenging year for Speaking Well In Public; my business dedicated to teaching public speaking skills for business, performance and social occasions.

I’ve created and delivered courses on:

Professional actors’ tips for trainers – exploring how actors use their voices and non-verbal communication to captivate and entertain an audience, while delivering a clear message.

Skills for reading aloud to an audience for business – how to deliver a formal script with style and impact when speaking at a conference or other business event.

Script-reading for film and theatre – how to give an interesting and spontaneous-seeming performance when sight-reading from a script.

Interviewing techniques – how to engage with and gather useful information from an interviewee.

Clients and audiences included:

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development’s Sussex Trainers’ Forum – an association of professional trainers practising in the Sussex area.

The Critical Incident event – bringing Arts and Business together for a day of workshops, training and debates. During the Critical Incident, I participated in a seminar presented by Studio 1919 on image versus character in business, and a debate on the arts, discussing the merits of business funding and public funding.

The Brighton Film Makers’ Coalition – an organisation of over five hundred film industry members, including writers, directors, technical crew and performers.

The actors of Chronicle Theatre – a ‘verbatim theatre’ company creating new drama from interviews, testimonies and real life experiences.

I also provided corporate actor/role-player services creating realistic scenarios for recruitment, training and assessment in business, for clients including BUPA, EDF and the Surrey and Sussex Fire and Rescue Services.

Other news:

I’ve made links with the Brighton Chamber of Commerce, attended business trade shows and coaching sessions in London and Sussex and given several radio interviews on the subjects of public speaking, acting and dealing with nerves.

I recently directed my first short film, ‘Dusa’, and as an actor I’ve just finished filming for a pair of independent films; ‘Pride and Quatermass’ and ‘Movie Heat’. All three are now in post-production.

This summer I played Helena in scenes from ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ as part of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Madness’; a new celebration of Shakespeare scenes, speeches and sonnets performed by members of Sussex Equity. Equity News Magazine said “… Philippa Hammond, outstanding as a Helena who glints words.”

I attended the Production Show / Broadcast Video and the Perform / Move it trade shows at Earl’s Court and Olympia, meeting with casting directors and theatre, film and TV industry members.

Plans for the new year:

Sparked by my interest in the Evening Standard’s current child literacy campaign and the importance of reading to children to help develop a love of reading and books as a great start in life, I’ll be presenting a series of workshops for adults on Reading to Children.

I’ll soon be releasing my new CD on Reading to Children. The CD takes you through dealing with shyness and nerves, controlling breathing and posture, developing your voice and giving an interesting and characterful reading.

I’ll also be presenting my newly-developed workshops on:

The Elevator Speech – your answer to the question ‘and what do you do?’ as the beginning of every contact and a major influence on your business success,

and

Corporate Roleplay Skills for Business – how actor/roleplayer skills can enhance your company’s learning, development and assessment events.

My Winter 2011/12 newsletter will be published shortly.

Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year

Philippa Hammond
